Our Founder

Ferdinand Holm completed his Bachelor of Building Arts (1993) and Bachelor of Architecture (1995) at the University of Port Elizabeth. He began his career with Erhard Roxin Architects in Namibia, where he worked on public and institutional projects, including the restoration of the State Mental Health Centre in Windhoek and the award-winning Henties Bay Research Centre for the University of Namibia.

In 1998 he joined Holm Jordaan & Partners, contributing to major public projects such as Project Phoenix, the winning design for the rebuilding of the Pretoria City Council’s headquarters. His design talent was recognised through several awards, including first prize in the Volkmann housing competition (Walvis Bay) and finalist selection in the French Namibian Cultural Centre competition (Windhoek).

By 2000 he broadened his professional scope at Brink Stokes Marais & Moolman (Pty) Ltd., later becoming a director. During this period, he worked on prominent heritage and restoration projects, including the Presidential Guest House and Maroela in Pretoria for the Department of Public Works and SAHRA.

In 2002, Ferdinand founded FC Holm Architects CC in George, Western Cape. Under his leadership, the practice has grown into a multidisciplinary firm with projects across the Southern Cape and beyond. Career highlights include being named a finalist for BP’s new head office at the V&A Waterfront, the football grandstand and VIP facility in Beaufort West, and more recently, the redevelopment of SANParks’ Storms River Mouth Entrance, master planning at Fancourt, and luxury lodges at Gondwana Private Game Reserve.

Ferdinand’s career reflects a consistent ability to bridge contemporary architectural innovation with heritage preservation, shaping projects that respond sensitively to context and community.

Our Practice

Founded in 2002 by Ferdinand Holm, the practice began modestly with one architect, one administrative staff member, and shared office space in the George CBD. By 2003, the firm had relocated to its current premises, marking the start of steady growth in both capacity and expertise.

The early years coincided with a period of significant development in the Southern Cape, during which FC Holm played a key role in the planning and execution of residential estate projects across George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, and Herbertsdale. Initially focused on residential and commercial projects, the practice’s portfolio soon expanded to include government and institutional commissions.

In 2006, the addition of a landscape architect broadened the firm’s service offering, followed over time by the integration of interior design and project and construction management. This multidisciplinary approach has enabled FC Holm to deliver a comprehensive service — from concept design through to procurement and construction — across a diverse range of projects. Today, the team comprises architects, landscape architects, project and construction managers, supported by technical and administrative staff.

Over the years, FC Holm has established a strong reputation for excellence in high-end residential architecture, commercial developments, government and institutional projects, as well as landscape and planning initiatives. The firm’s project footprint spans the Southern Cape and beyond, with work completed in locations including Jeffrey’s Bay, Cradock, Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay, George, Mossel Bay, Dana Bay, Riversdale, Beaufort West, Leeu Gamka, and Cape Town.

Today, the practice continues to evolve with its people and projects, maintaining a focus on design quality, environmental sensitivity, and long-term resilience in an ever-changing built environment.
